Our mission is to position wind energy as a key solution to deliver a clean and just energy transition and accelerate electrification in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). In the face of a climate emergency at national and regional levels, it is imperative to increase political ambition for grid-connected wind energy, upgrade policies and energy system regulation for the uptake of renewable energy, and eradicate market barriers to provide long-lasting certainty for investment and scale-up of wind.
Half of the countries in the LAC region have pledged to achieve net zero emissions by mid-century or earlier. They represent around 65% of regional GDP and 60% of its energy-related CO2 emissions. Investment in clean energy needs a major boost (doubling by 2030 to USD 150 billion and rising fivefold by 2050) to reach energy-related emissions reduction goals and to pursue sustainable growth trajectories.
Since 2007, GWEC’s market-opening advocacy in the region has collaborated closely with local wind energy associations and strategic regional institutions, resulting in foundational policies and regulations for renewable energy across the region. Growing wind to match decarbonisation goals requires an increase of renewable energy ambition and fit-for-purpose policies and regulations to drive the energy transition across the region.
