Our Mission

Our mission is to position wind energy as a key solution to deliver a clean and just energy transition and accelerate electrification in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). In the face of a climate emergency at national and regional levels, it is imperative to increase political ambition for grid-connected wind energy, upgrade policies and energy system regulation for the uptake of renewable energy, and eradicate market barriers to provide long-lasting certainty for investment and scale-up of wind.

Half of the countries in the LAC region have pledged to achieve net zero emissions by mid-century or earlier. They represent around 65% of regional GDP and 60% of its energy-related CO2 emissions. Investment in clean energy needs a major boost (doubling by 2030 to USD 150 billion and rising fivefold by 2050) to reach energy-related emissions reduction goals and to pursue sustainable growth trajectories.

Since 2007, GWEC’s market-opening advocacy in the region has collaborated closely with local wind energy associations and strategic regional institutions, resulting in foundational policies and regulations for renewable energy across the region. Growing wind to match decarbonisation goals requires an increase of renewable energy ambition and fit-for-purpose policies and regulations to drive the energy transition across the region.

Objectives

GWEC shares industry knowledge and experience with a range of key regional stakeholders including governments, multilateral institutions, industry, academia and civil society. The team works with in-region partners on how to:

  • Address electrification with large-scale wind energy deployment.
  • Implement secure and sustainable investment schemes for wind
  • Advocate for transparency and clear regulatory frameworks to enable wind energy industry investments
  • Build streamlined and effective permitting regimes
  • Tackle misinformation and disinformation on wind energy in the region
  • Enhance social acceptance to accelerate the deployment of wind energy
  • Collaborate on the development of the regional supply chain with global impact
  • Position wind energy as a key solution to support regional governments on decarbonising local industries and achieving their NDCs

Focus Areas

  • Policy and Advocacy

With almost 20 years of experience on advocacy in LAC, GWEC works closely with key stakeholders in the region (among governments, regional associations, industry's representatives and international institutions) to build and strengthen political will and increase ambition for renewable energy,  and to outline policies and regulations to accelerate wind energy projects deployment.
  • Business Development

Through our industry-leading market intelligence, with up-to-date market data and insights, and a successful track record on tailor-made and strategic initiatives in LAC, GWEC promotes with our local partners the main industry summits and exhibitions in the region, creating environments for the wind industry to discuss the main challenges in the region, find solutions, and network.
  • Capacity Building

By sharing our global experience and knowledge between local stakeholders and international players, GWEC contributes to provide relevant information and networking opportunities for businesses and organisations to develop the skills and knowledge needed to establish local markets.
  • Information and Education

GWEC delivers trusted, data-driven insights and educational resources that advance understanding of wind energy worldwide. Our publications, events, and outreach initiatives inform stakeholders, inspire public engagement, and support evidence-based decision-making across the renewable energy sector.
  • Ramón Fiestas

Although wind energy in Latin America has been growing over decades just in a few countries close to the path of their energy policies, a strong uptake of new investments is becoming critical to ensure existing supply chains, while closing the gap of climate goals in its largest polluting economies.

Supporting enabling renewable energy financing and investment environments under levelized playing fields, long lasting and legal certain frameworks build up with the voice of the industry and the private sector, will focus our efforts and tasks to ensure wind scales up to its next stage in the region
