GWEC’s Women in Wind Joins Brazil’s Gender Equity Energy Pact Ahead of COP 30
August 12, Brasília | As part of Brazil's growing mobilisation toward COP30, the Global Wind Energy Council's (GWEC) Women in Wind (WiW) initiative has officially joined the Brazil National Energy Gender Equity Pact, a landmark movement uniting over 15 women-led networks in the Brazil energy sector to champion gender inclusion and leadership.
At the high-level event Energia com Equidade: Mulheres no centro da COP30, hosted on August 7 at the Ministry of Mines and Energy headquarters in Brasília, Roberta Cox, GWEC Policy Director for Brazil, signed the Letter from the Women of the National Energy Gender Equity Pact for COP 30 on behalf of GWEC's WiW. The event was part of the ongoing actions under the Gender Equity Pact signed in 2024 and marks a critical step in centering women’s voices in Brazil’s pathway to a just, inclusive, and sustainable energy transition.
The Letter from the Women of the National Energy Gender Equity Pact addressed to the COP30 presidency, outlines a 5-point commitment to:
- Ensure gender representation in climate and energy decisions
- Incorporate gender and race indicators into energy transition policies
- Combat energy poverty with a gender justice approach
- Promote the qualification and employability of women in the new green economy
- Value and strengthen women's networks in the energy sector
The Letter, now co-signed by Women in Wind and others, will be taken to COP30 in Belém, Brazil, as a symbol of unity, purpose, and action for gender-responsive climate solutions.
Roberta Cox, GWEC Policy Director, Brazil:
“Signing this Charter on behalf of GWEC and Women in Wind is a powerful reminder that Brazil’s energy transition must not only be green, but also fair and inclusive. We believe that women’s leadership, data-driven policy, and collaboration across sectors are key to unlocking a just energy future. We are proud to stand alongside this diverse coalition of women’s networks and reaffirm our commitment to equity on the road to COP30.”
Marcela Ruas, GWEC Program Manager, Latin America:
“It was incredibly rewarding to help bring Women in Wind into the National Energy Gender Equity Pact. Collaborating with stakeholders to align on this shared mission, especially within the COP30 context, has been a proud milestone.”
Rebecca Williams, GWEC Deputy CEO & Jeanette Gitobu, Director, Women in Wind:
“We’re proud to have Women in Wind join the Brazil National Energy Gender Equity Pact. This is more than a commitment, it’s a partnership grounded in shared values and a drive for lasting change. As COP30 approaches, we look forward to working with this dynamic community to put gender equity at the center of climate and energy action.”
The event brought together specialists, energy leaders, and representatives from national and international organizations, reinforcing the momentum for structural transformation in the sector. After the signing, the letter was formally presented to Elbia Gannoum, Special Government Envoy for Energy at COP30 and GWEC Vice-Chair, who received it “with great happiness and responsibility.” During the event, Elbia also highlighted the importance of Women in Wind and expressed pride in being one of its ambassadors.
