ELECTRICITY
was generated by wind power around the globe last year
The transition to a clean, secure and affordable energy system begins with wind power. We're witnessing an irreversible shift toward renewable energy as the dominant growth engine of the economy. The momentum is with us, and this marks the beginning of a new era in the energy transition.
-
Wind is a major part of the global power system
-
Wind is fundamental to security and prosperity
-
The growth outlook for wind remains strong: reaching 2 Terawatts by 2029
As the global voice of the wind industry, the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) engages with policymakers, business leaders, civil society and other stakeholders to ensure wind energy is central to climate dialogue and implementation of the clean energy era.

Why We Need More Wind
Energy Security
- Countries that invest in homegrown wind power are better protected from oil and gas market volatility and geopolitical turmoil.
System Resilience
- Complementarity is critical to energy system resilience. Wind is the ideal partner for most renewable energy systems.
Lowering Energy Bills
- Wind energy is getting cheaper over time. The more wind power in the energy system, the less billpayers will pay over the long-term.
Creating Good Paying Jobs
- The wind industry is already employing nearly two million workers, with hundreds of thousands more set to be recruited in the next few years.
Reducing Carbon Emissions
- Wind power’s zero carbon electricity is essential to displace carbon emissions and air pollutants.
Our Flagship Event

Powering The Future Begins With Wind
Economy-wide electrification is becoming central to energy security and is reflected in Türkiye’s COP31 “35 by 35” ambition. Wind is critical to supplying this transition: onshore wind delivers affordable domestic power at scale, while offshore wind provides high-capacity generation that complements other renewables. Together, they strengthen energy security and power growing demand across industry, transport, green hydrogen and digital infrastructure.
This makes wind power central to delivering five key priorities:
Energy Security
Climate Action
Stronger Economies
Better Investments
Electrification
Turning this potential into delivery requires coordinated action to fast-tracking permitting, modernise grid and storage, mobilise finance, expand electrification through frameworks like corporate PPAs, and strengthen resilient supply chains backed by clear demand signals and offtake certainty.
The Launch of the Global Wind Declaration
During the Powering The Future Begins With Wind session, GWEC will launch the Global Wind Declaration for Powering the Future: A Blueprint for Accelerated Deployment by Industry and Governments. COP31 provides a unique platform for industry leaders, investors and policymakers to align behind a shared vision: establishing wind as the cornerstone of the global clean energy transition.
The declaration will showcase concrete commitments, partnerships and actions needed to continue to enable wind as the primary supply-side solution of the global electrification agenda and the energy transition.
