Global Wind Energy Council congratulates UK government and Vestas on factory announcement

The United Kingdom's status as a global leader in renewable energy and a major destination for international investment was confirmed as GWEC member Vestas announced plans to build a major new nacelle factory in Scotland.

The factory represents a capital investment in excess of €250m and would produce nacelles and hubs for Vestas’s offshore wind turbine, the V236-15.0 MW. This is expected to strengthen the UK wind supply chain and create up to 500 skilled direct jobs as well as indirect jobs.

The UK is an exemplar to other countries in how to rapidly expand homegrown, secure and affordable renewable power and generate green jobs and economic development.

Ben Backwell, GWEC CEO

Commenting on the announcement, Ben Backwell, CEO of GWEC, said it demonstrated the global wind sector's growing strength as well as renewed confidence in the UK as a destination for investment following the recent AR7 auction round.

"The UK Government has to be congratulated for its commitment to wind energy. The UK is an exemplar to other countries in how to rapidly expand homegrown, secure and affordable renewable power and generate green jobs and economic development.

"Skyrocketing oil and gas prices caused by the close of the Strait of Hormuz demonstrate why it’s critical to tap your own domestic, limitless wind energy and insulate your economy against future price shocks."
