Wind farms could provide 12% of the world’s electricity by 2020 if governments implement supportive and stable policies and meet their commitments to tackle climate change, says a new report from industry body the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).

The biannual report, written with campaign group Greenpeace, predicts that global installed wind capacity could hit 1,150GW by 2020, up from 238GW last year, if a number of obstacles currently facing the market are overcome.

The 'advanced scenario' – one of three different pathways outlined by the report for growth of the sector – is almost double that of the 2020 forecast by the International Energy Agency (587GW).
