WORLDWIDE: To mark Global Wind Day, the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) has highlighted the one million jobs in the global wind sector.

Data released in May by the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) said employment in wind grew 5% in 2015 and now stand at more than 1.1 million jobs.

Wind employment in the US increased by 21% to 88,000 jobs. Brazil added an estimated 41,000 wind positions in 2015, up 14%, Irena said. Wind employment in China grew 1% to reach 507,000 jobs in 2015.

"We are getting bigger, better and cheaper. The wind industry has witnessed record growth in recent years which not only helps the world to meet the climate goals agreed in Paris, but also generates much needed new jobs and boosts local economies, to the tune of about $110 billion last year", said GWEC secretary general Steve Sawyer.
